Vertebral Compression Fracture Treatment
The combination of bed rest, bracing, and medication is generally used first as an effort to allow the vertebral compression fracture to heal on its own.
Bed Rest
Usually a short period of rest is prescribed.
Sometimes bed rest is prescribed for one week or more.
Bracing
Called an orthosis.
May be custom fitted.
Prevents general movement especially forward bending to reduce fracture pain and to promote healing
Prescription Medication
Narcotics and/or NSAIDs (e.g. Advil or Motrin) are prescribed for pain relief so the patient can tolerate the pain and are able to move about.
Medications for treatment of VCF’s are not designed to aid in healing.
