Diagnosis
How are fibroids diagnosed?
If you think you may have fibroids you should see a physician familiar with diagnosing and treating fibroids. This may be your family physician, gynecologist or interventional radiologist.
Fibroid symptoms are non-specific and the evaluation will include:
* History
* Pelvic examination
* Pelvic ultrasound
* MRI-the most comprehensive imaging of female pelvic diseases
Women typically undergo an ultrasound at their gynecologist’s office as part of the evaluation process to determine the presence of uterine fibroids. It is a rudimentary imaging tool for fibroids that often does not show other uterine diseases that may mimic fibroids. For this reason, MRI is the gold standard for imaging fibroids and other pelvic diseases
The proper treatment and the best outcomes are directly related to making the correct diagnosis and visualizing the abnormalities and their relationship to the uterus and other pelvic structures.
